They s/b just a hard and firm as a foxtail or vetchia to be viable. The fastest way I check for viable seed is to roll the seed on concrete with my foot, giving it some moderate pressure. It took about years of seeding until some viable seed dropped. I have been growing F2 Foxy Ladies for the last 3 years. I planted a 1 gallon Cyphophoenix elgans to the east of it about 3-4 years ago, so its just starting to gain some momentum. Sorry to hear this…..time to edit and replace.
Are Foxy Lady palms sterile?
Wanting to put them out but not if they’re not a true hybrid. Hybrids seem to have a higher rate of growth for some reason. The seed looks pretty elongated, so I would think it would have a lot of Vetchia characteristics.

Anytime now the frond on the left, which is against the lean will fall off, and you can see the angle of the newest frond which should be on that side of the palm is leaning to the right. I at least have 2 other Foxy Ladies planted about the same time. I have two good size foxy ladies that are perhaps my favorites. I did notice the dark spot on the side away from the walkway a while back, but it wasn’t really oozing anything at the time.

Maybe something I might try to track as time goes on. Look how elongated this foxy gold casino viable F2 seed is, that I picked up yesterday. Maybe a few other palmtalkers that I sold F2 to can pipe in. The F2 I am growing so far is hard to tell if they will have the vigor yet, but so far, so good. The over variegated ones seem to languish and slowly die or just grow very slow, probably due to lack of chlorophyll.

Exactly I believe even the green form has some at some point I saw a mature green form produce some variation. Did not notice the variegation earlier but as Jim pointed out, on the lower leaf there it is.
From what I understand about F2 hybrids, this result is not surprising. Kind of like a cross between foxtail fiber and the very smooth Vechis fiber. Here is the 5th seed that failed float test. I picked up a few seed that was on the ground while taking pics.
- I don’t know the different rates of growth for them in Florida.
- I believe most of the time the seeds never germinate but very occasionally they do.
- The only mature ( and flowering /seeding ) specimens i’m currently familiar with are those in Kopsick’s collection.
- I was advised by the seller to apply a kelp extract/ water mix, then heavy water every other day, with superthrive/ water every five days.
- Last year I added three Beccariophoenix alfredii, which I’m really liking so far due to their hardiness, and some Areca palms.
- I have 2 that look just like a foxtail.
So I have been watching this palm I acquired as a Foxy Lady as it has increasing leaned toward the south this summer. Well mine has a sparse seed set that dropped today. If this one produces seed, you should be able to tell if they have a chance.. While the largest would flower & produce seed often, most seed i’d collect were empty or basically liquid when opened.
- I think I would be more worried about the dark weeping spots.
- If you’re up to a good challenge, Kopsick Palm – Arboretum in St. Pete has a few specimens, at least one that can / has produced seed.
- Apparently when the greenies are much older they can also put out the odd variegated leaf.

What is the difference between Foxtail & Foxylady seedlings?
A guy in my area has them for sale pick up at 200 for a baby 1 gallon pot , he had 4 now he has 3 , i got one today and I am looking forward to watching it grow Regardless, good luck and hopefully you’ll be able to get a hold of this great palm sooner rather than later.. Bigger ” seeder ” at Kopsick sits close to where the collection’s Veitchia grove is located. I have little doubt that had it been spring, or this time of year, germination likely would have succeeded. I have 3-7g (one slight variegation) I have 3-3g (one slight variegation) I do need to get better on checking my palm talk tho! Purchased several years ago as a seedling from a breeder in Florida. Was it grown from a seed made by nature or by manual cross pollination? Where did that palm originate?
The seeds all had 2 white racing stripes. Therefore, you would expect the foxtails to have the wider leaves. Been in pots in the greenhouse for a couple years, very hard to tell. Mine are Veitchia Joannis that we’re planted about the same time.
So after a couple weeks of treatment, the remaining leaves are browning but I have noticed some minimal growth (a couple millimeters) of the spear. If you do the 24hr soak thing, put a weak solution of seaweed extract in the water too. This would happen far more quickly for you than it does for those of us in the humid tropics where the plant tissues survive on atmospheric moisture for ages before the final collapse. That should happen in shade and then it should be shifted up and placed gradually into more and more sun over the course of a month or two until it is hardened and can go in the ground. Do you have a FULL shade spot under some trees or overhang?
I have 2 that look just like a foxtail. I know of 1 other grower in Cape Coral that gets viable seed. Here are a few pics of some of the F2’s that I am growing out to sell. The vast majority of the good looking seed are NOT viable. Sometime even though they are hard, they float.
Most likely a resold Rancho Soledad plant or a Florida import from Sparkman. But if there is actually “zero” movement, your palm is probably already dead. Even in the slowest sickliest palm, you should notice some movement of the spear – even 1/8 of an inch in a week assures that your palm is still alive. If you meant the spear has not moved at all, then your palm was in trouble from day one.
Lol but really I’ve only heard amazing things from this palm and I absolutely love the looks from it. The hybrid Wodyetia bifurcata x Veitchia arecina. I came across the legendary Foxy lady palm.
Leaning Foxy Lady palm
The seeds that Mike Evans germinated were F2, there is no guarantee they will be Wodveitchias. Pretty sure they keep their variegation, at this stage we can already see the difference between the variegated lot and the greenies. I had about 7 seeds so I just planted them all, one popped. I have 6 mature foxy ladies and all but 2 are variegated. Difficult losing palms, but the more palms you grow, over time, we lose some; that’s how it goes.
Anyone have success with seeds from a foxy lady? After many years and trees that are ungodly tall, my foxy lady, 1 of 2 dropped 2 very ripe very real looking seeds. I’m hoping that the foxy lady will turn all green it only has 1 frond that is variegated.
Some died at seedling stage, and others just died a slow death, even though they were all grown in shade. They seem to have an overall hard time surviving. The only exception, would be the ones that are extremely variegated. Erik, the Foxtails were planted many months before the F1 Foxyladies.
